Americans average only six hours and 40 minutes of sleep nightly, well below the recommended 7-9 hours for adults. The Apple Heart and Movement Study analyzed nearly 17 million sleep records from over 61,000 US adults across all states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico. Hawaii residents get the least sleep at six hours and 31 minutes but go to bed earliest at 11:06 PM local time. Washington DC stays up latest, with bedtime at 11:56 PM. Other late sleepers include New York (11:53 PM), Puerto Rico (11:51 PM), and Kentucky (11:50 PM). Early bedtime states after Hawaii include New Mexico and Arizona, both at 11:12 PM, followed by Maine at 11:13 PM. Despite varying bedtimes, most states average between 6.2 to 6.8 hours of sleep nightly. (Story URL)
