A new survey reveals 19% of Americans don’t know grain-based foods are needed daily for proper nutrition. The study of 2,000 adults found 29% admit they don’t understand what constitutes a “healthy plate.” Respondents believe fruits and vegetables should comprise 38% of meals, below the recommended 50%. They overestimate protein needs at 28% versus the suggested 25%. One-quarter view grain foods unfavorably, leading 54% to make dietary changes without professional guidance. Common modifications include reducing bread consumption by 28% and pasta by 27%. “Combining whole and refined grains into consumer diets enables more flexible ways to add fiber, B vitamins and essential nutrients to support good health,” says Grain Foods Foundation Executive Director Erin Ball.
