Harry Styles paused his Madison Square Garden concert in New York City on October 10 to acknowledge Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old man who was recently shot by a federal immigration officer.
Before performing his song Sign of the Times, Styles asked the audience to take a moment to think about Belgal. The singer also encouraged concertgoers to care for one another.
Belgal was injured on October 8 during an attempted arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood. His 5-year-old son was inside the vehicle at the time but was not physically injured.
Federal officials said Belgal drove toward officers and struck government vehicles. Local officials and witnesses have questioned aspects of that account, prompting calls for further investigation.
Styles did not directly address ICE or discuss the circumstances of the shooting during his remarks.
The moment came during his 30-show Together, Together residency at Madison Square Garden, which began August 26 and is scheduled to conclude October 31.
