Research from the University of California, Santa Cruz discovered that sea lions could stay on beat better than some humans. Sea animal Ronan matched and even outperformed humans in a rhythm test, which challenges the belief that beat-keeping is uniquely human. None of the 10 human participants outperformed Ronan. “She’s motivated. To her, it’s a game she knows how to win,” study author Colleen Reichmuth said. “And the likes the fish that come with it.” This research could suggest that animals experience music in ways previously unheard of.
