Everyone is trying to eat healthier, but bagged lettuce could be one of the riskiest items to buy at the grocery store! “When you look at past outbreaks, bagged salads have been a leading cause of foodborne illness,” Darin Detwiler of Northeastern University said. This is because they are washed in large batches, which could leave them susceptible to E. coli, listeria, and salmonella. While cooking food can kill this bacteria, many people buy bagged lettuce to eat it as-is. As a precaution, consumers can make sure greens aren’t expired; avoid bags with condensation; or simply buy heads of lettuce. (Food Beast)
